The Winnipeg School Division Board of Trustees is now working on WSD’s 2024/25 budget.

The Board develops the budget based on consultations with our school communities.

What you said

Improve student success

  • Smaller class sizes
  • Improved classroom instruction
  • Greater academic engagement
  • Increase attendance and higher graduation rates
  • Better maths and literacy achievement
  • More learning support teachers in schools

Create “Sticky” schools

  • Universal nutrition program
  • Phase-in no-fee lunch supervision
  • Replace three school playgrounds annually
  • Build powerful neighbourhood schools

Community Supports

  • Enhance school safety
  • Improve settlement services for newcomers and expand adult EAL to the Shaughnessy Park area
  • Develop RB Russell Career Lab

The province’s education funding announcement of a 1% increase ($2.6 million) to WSD does not cover the increased costs the division is experiencing, which include:

  • Salary contract settlements
  • Service agreement inflation
  • Current programs and resources inflation

As a first step, the division has identified almost $4 million in administrative savings for the 2024/25 budget.

To meet the needs of our school communities, additional revenue is needed. A possible 3.4% increase to the property education tax, keeping in line with the rate of inflation, would mean WSD can:

  • Maintain current programs and services
  • Provide for fully funded nutrition and food programs
  • Provide $2.4 million allocation toward budget priorities as communicated by you

*Property education tax levy proposal 3.4% or $51 per average household (2024 average value of home in WSD $246,700). A rebate committed by the province will reduce the net amount

Alternatively, a 3% property education tax increase would allow for a budget that maintains current programs and services and a fully funded nutrition program, but would reduce allocations toward budget priorities brought forth by our school communities.

The Board of Trustees is hosting a budget consultation open to the public on February 26 at 7 p.m. at Tec Voc High School.
Input on the draft budget can be submitted by email to, in writing to 1577 Wall Street East, Winnipeg, MB R3E 2S5 or by registering at 204-775-0231 no later than February 22 to appear in person.
