Quantum Arts Program

October 4, 2023

Winnipeg Art Gallery

Grade 5 Through 8

This is an ambitious and demanding program that requires students to be self-motivated, willing to try new things and able to work both independently and as part of a group. Students are involved in a large group project as well as a series of smaller, individual projects that employ a variety of drawing and painting materials and clay or other sculptural materials.

The program is structured but open-ended enough to allow for self-expression. Projects are based on themes that allow for a broad scope of artistic possibilities and intend to expand the students’ definitions of visual art practice. Themes often involve historical and literary components to add depth and richness to the visual research and exploration.

A presentation demonstrating the development of the students’ projects takes place at the Quantum Arts Finale.

After the formal presentations, a small reception is held, where a mini exhibition of the students’ work will be on display.

Program Schedule:

This Program will run during the WAG winter session.

Classes will Run:
January 25, 2024 to March 19, 2024

Program Schedule:

Section 1: The Elements of Film

Week 1:
Tuesday - January 23
Introduction to the basic outline of the program structure and the 10 weeks of workshops. Students and coordinator build, breakdown, block, and direct a scene together learning how to incorporate filmic storytelling devices such as: set(s), props, acting technique, text, and directing.

Thursday - January 25
Scriptwriting techniques are explored. The story triangle and how to develop primary and secondary characters, text, and subtext, are taught and developed. Students, with the help of a professional writer, discuss possible methods that maybe applied to developing scripts, and together, develop a concept to be written for the Quantum film to be shot in week #7. Students begin “writing” story pieces for the concept.

Week 2:
Tuesday - January 30
Camera technique and technical principles are discussed in a practical, hands on workshop with a professional film technician and a camera. Students shoot a scene and learn how to tell story filmically — implementing the principles of mood, power shifts, character and script development.

Thursday – February 1
Film lighting is explored with a professional film technician. Lights are discussed in a hands on workshop in which students light objects in several ways and see how each can lend itself to characters, tension, pacing, and story.

Week 3:
Tuesday – February 6
Recording of sound is explored for location sound for film and video projects. Students will learn how to do a basic sound edit when they’re done recording.

Thursday – February 8
Techniques used in developing characters quickly and filmically, subtext, film acting objective-motivation, and basic tricks used in expediting the direction of acting in film are all explored in a hands on workshop. Students take the roles of both director and actor and build scenes with the emphasis on this relationship.

Week 4:
Tuesday - February 13
Students are introduced to the history of film from the late 19th century to contemporary developments in narrative fiction, documentary, experimental film and animation. Students break into partnerships of two-three and develop their own, one-take/one-minute short film in their genre of choice.

Thursday - February 15
Class watches a feature length Canadian contemporary film. Up to this point, the class has learned to “build” a film artistically, creatively, and technically. Together, we now break down a film and discuss all the components learned to date that helped make the film what it is — or isn’t!

Section 2: Production–Capturing the Image

Week 5:
Tuesday - February 20
The film concept for our Quantum shoot has been written and is brought to the class and distributed among the students. We discuss the methods we will use to shoot it in week #7. Crew positions are taught and assigned and the outline of our “pre-production” week #6 is discussed and planned.

Thursday - February 22
The specific technical plan for the shoot in week #7 is discussed. A professional film technician goes over the plan with the students and together they prep the look, lighting, texture, “feel” plan for the up coming shoot, with a light kit and the camera the tech recommends for the shoot (but BASED on the students’ vision).

Week 6:
Tuesday - February 27
The crew plans for the shoot. Crew positions have been discussed, the responsibilities per “department” have been outlined and the students prep accordingly.

Thursday – February 29
The students continue and complete preparation for the shoot.

Week 7:
Tuesday – March 5
Shoot Day 1
The students, with a professional film technician, film equipment, and professional actors, begin shooting their Quantum film in the Winnipeg Film Group Studio.

Thursday – March 7
Shoot Day 2
Students continue and complete short Quantum film.

Week 8:
Tuesday - March 12
Students talk about the shoot - what went well, what went wrong, what they would have done differently. Students break down and examine filmic elements as they have learned them, in feature film we watched in Week #4.

Thursday - March 14
Edit Day 1
Students are taught Adobe Premeire Pro and basic film editing techniques and principles with a professional film editor. The students, with the editor’s guidance, begin editing their Quantum short film.

Week 9
Tuesday - March 19
Edit Day 2
Students and editor instructor complete the edit of Quantum short film.

Thursday - March 21
Students are welcome to bring to class any scene(s) from a film they have seen or particularly like to view, examine, break down, talk about from any filmic perspective or with specific attention to any filmic element they have learned in Quantum.
