Now accepting nursery & kindergarten registration for 2023-2024
May 15, 2023 Community
At Lord Selkirk School we offer half-day Nursery and Kindergarten classes.
Registrations for Nursery and NEW Kindergarten Students are being accepted for the 2023-2024 school year.
Residency is based on where the legal guardian resides. Please bring your child's birth certificate, MB Medical Card and confirmation of your current address. This could be a utility bill, rental agreement or tax statement. If your child is presently in Nursery in our school there is no need to re-register for Kindergarten.
The Nursery School Program is free of charge for those who live within the Winnipeg School Division boundaries. Nursery children learn through play, with the main focus being language development. Students learn songs and poems and work on developing social skills. The students have specific learning outcomes for Language Arts and Math, and they will receive a report card to let parents know what their child is working on.
The Kindergarten students follow the curriculum provided by Manitoba Education. In Language Arts students learn many things, including recognizing and writing upper and lower case letters, recognizing and producing rhymes, and learning to appreciate books. Towards the end of the year, the students are taught the beginning stages of reading and writing to help prepare them for grade one.
In the Math Program the students are often divided into small groups to work on the four main curriculum areas: Patterns and Relationships, Statistics and Probability, Shape and Space, and Number. There is a focus on understanding how numbers and patterns work and using mathematical language.
The Kindergarten teacher teaches Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music and Art using various monthly themes.
