Flu Prevention Fact Sheet

February 8, 2021

Every year, new strains of the influenza virus are introduced to Manitoba. The flu season in Manitoba usually begins in the late fall and lasts into the spring. Our best response, as members of the community, is to prevent spreading these viruses.

What is the flu?

The flu is an infection caused by a virus. It can spread easily from one person to another through coughing, sneezing or sharing food or drinks. You can also get the flu by touching objects contaminated with flu virus and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose.

Here are some proven ways to help reduce the spread of germs and viruses:

Wash hands: Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water for at least 15 seconds.

Elbows: Cough or sneeze into the inside of the elbow.

Eyes, nose, and mouth: Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs and viruses can transfer from the hands into the body in this way.

Safety zone: Stay at least one metre away from anyone who is sick.

Sick: If you are sick stay home from work.

Winnipeg School Division (WSD) has a pandemic plan which is a part of its Crisis Response Plan. This document outlines suggestions for prevention of the spread of illness, as well as a detailed plan as to how WSD would proceed in the event of a pandemic.

The WSD pandemic plan is aligned with existing provincial and federal guidelines, regulations and directions. The plan was developed in accordance with the Canadian Pandemic Influenza Plan (2004), the Manitoba Health Preparing for Pandemic, Guidelines for Manitoba Local Governments (Spring 2006) and other key documents, expert opinion and stakeholder input. It is reviewed and updated regularly.

  • Manitoba Health is responsible for coordinating the province-wide response to a pandemic, including the declaration of a provincial emergency.
  • In the event that a provincial emergency is declared, WSD will inform parents with information sent home with students. WSD will post information to its website to keep both parents and the community informed.
  • Any closure of schools will be at the direction of the Minister of Education and Advanced Learning in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer.
