Programing for Students Who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in the Winnipeg School Division are supported by a team of individuals including a teacher for the Deaf or hard of hearing, educational audiologists, a resource teacher, the classroom teacher and may include an EA, a computerized notetaker or an ASL interpreter.  Supports vary depending on the type and degree of student's hearing loss as well as the individual needs of each student. Students who are Deaf or hard of hearing are included in the regular classroom and appropriate adaptations are put in place to best meet student need.

Students can be supported with various modes of communication including spoken English, spoken English with sign support, American Sign Language or computerized notetaking.  Student progress is reviewed regularly to ensure the educational programming is appropriate and is meeting student need.

Programming for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing aims to develop optimal academic, communication, social, pre-employment and community awareness skills.  Additionally, an emphasis is placed on fostering a sense of belonging within the community of students in the division who have a hearing loss, through social events and school partnerships.
