Students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

February 8, 2021

These programs are designed for students in grades 1-12 (to age 21) residing within the Winnipeg School Division catchment areas who have a confirmed medical diagnosis of FASD and learning needs that may not be adequately met in their home school. The students benefit from a self-contained classroom that has a smaller student teacher ratio, is very structured and has purposeful and reduced environmental stimuli.

Determining placement in a specialized low enrollment setting is a collaborative process involving the school support team, divisional FASD Support Services teachers, and the parent/guardian. Information from community agencies may also be considered.

The goal of the programs is to facilitate student learning by providing specialized teaching strategies and adaptations to the classroom environment. Students receive support in developing appropriate social, self-management and problem-solving skills related to brain based behaviours as well as an academic program.

The students require specialized services and programming to meeting their unique learning needs. All students will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Each student’s progress is reviewed regularly to determine appropriate programming and integration into inclusive settings.
