Programs for students with Very Severe to Profound Emotional and or Behavioural Disorders (LAC)

February 8, 2021

Learning Assistance Centres

Learning Assistance Centres (LACs) and related programs are designed for students who are in grades 1-12 (to age 21) who have very severe emotional or behavioural disorders (EBD). The students exhibit behaviour that requires intensive support and intervention that is beyond the capacity of the home school to provide.

Determining placement in a low enrollment setting is a collaborative process involving the school team and the parent/guardian. Input from community agencies may also be considered.

The goal of the programs is to help the students develop the social, self-management, self-regulation and problem-solving skills that are necessary to re-integrate into the regular instructional setting. A focus on academic growth is part of the programming.

The students require specialized services and programming to meet their unique learning needs. All students have an IEP, including a behavior intervention plan (BIP). Progress is reviewed regularly to determine appropriate programming.
