I Love to Read Month

February held excitement for students and teachers celebrating literacy and reading throughout schools in WSD.

École Waterford Springs

Students in Roshel Salvador's Grade 3 class had Flashlight Fridays each week. Students created a comfy reading space, blinds closed, lights turned off, and students read with the light of their flashlights.

"The students always looked forward to Flashlight Fridays because it's something different," said Grade 3 teacher Roshel Salvador.

Mulvey School

Mulvey School hosted daily guest speakers and readers via Google Meet. Guests shared personal experiences, favourite stories, and students engaged with Mulvey alumnus, athletes and elected officials.

Mulvey School integrated Black History month, Aboriginal Storytelling month, and Inclusive Education Month into I Love to Read month initiatives by spotlighting community role models exploring a variety of texts and approaches to telling stories.

Prairie Rose School

During the week of February 14 to 18, 2022, Prairie Rose School celebrated I Love to Read month with the theme of Reading Around the World. Students listened to guest readers who "visited" virtually and had two Australian teachers and an Australian classroom send videos to Prairie Rose School. Students heard a book read in Chinese and listened to students in Thailand and Japan read books.

"It was fun to see students learn about what school is like in some other parts of the world," said Ken Romaniuk, Prairie Rose School Principal.
