Mr. Storey

June 4, 2026

It’s almost the end of the school year!  As of the day I am writing this, we have 27 school days left before summer vacation starts.   That’s not a lot of time!

In math we have been focusing very strongly on multiplication.  The students have been learning different strategies to solve multiplication problems involving 2- and 3-digit numbers.  This can be challenging as it’s necessary to have a strong grasp of multiplication facts to be successful.  For the grade 3’s, they have been working on making sure they have the 1x – 5x tables memorized.  For grade 4’s, they are expected to know their 1x – 5x tables and are focusing on the 6x – 10x tables.  If you’d like to see how your child is doing with this, ask them multiplication problems!

With writing, we are working on our last nonfiction writing project.  Students are writing a how-to guide on a topic of their choice.  The learning is focused on step-by-step instruction combined with a compelling introduction paragraph and a congratulatory closing paragraph.  These will be on display in June on our bulletin board.

With science we are looking at rocks and minerals.  Students have learned about the different kinds of rocks that we can see around the world and how they are made up.  They are also learning how to classify rocks using five criteria.

In social studies we are learning about ancient civilizations.  We have learned about the contributions of the Babylonian and Indus Valley empires, and we are currently looking at the Egyptian empire.  By the end of the year, students will have learned about the Roman and Greek empires as well.  Take a look at the pictures.  These are the students’ names written using heiroglyphs that they created to represent the meaning of their names.

The end of the year is quickly approaching! Our students have been diligently honing their skills in paragraph structure and story analysis in their writing. In math, we will continue refining our multiplication and division abilities while expanding our understanding of measurement. Having started with both non-standard and standard measurement, students are now delving into perimeter and area.

Students are continuing their learning about ancient civilizations and exploring how people lived, worked, and built communities long ago. Meanwhile, we are exploring plants and soils by learning about plant growth, soil types, and the important role they play in our environment.

Even with the warm weather, please continue encouraging your child to read for at least 20 minutes each evening. Why not take the reading outdoors and enjoy a book in the fresh air?
